At First Coast CCU, keeping your financial, sensitive, and personal information secure is one of our top priorities. Be aware and stay up-to-date on the latest scams and tactics with our resources and tips. 

Reminder!

First Coast CCU will NEVER call, text, or email you asking you for your sensitive information such as account passcodes, PINs, or social security number. If you receive one of these messages, hang up or flag the message as spam immediately.

Keep These Tips in Mind

Here are a few steps you can take today to keep your account secure. 

  • Monitor Your Account Regularly
  • Never Share Your Username or Password
  • Only Access Your Using a Secure WiFi Network
  • Use Strong, Unique Passwords
  • Immediately Report Lost or Stolen Cards to the Credit Union

Stay in the Know: Common Types of Scams

Scammers will send an email claiming to be from a trusted source, asking for your personal information or convincing your to click a link directing you to enter your information or log in to your “account.” 

TIP: Always check the email sender before clicking any links or downloading attachments. 

Scammers send texts that appear to come from legitimate sources, like banks or government agencies. The messages often create a sense of urgency, prompting the recipient to act quickly. Recipients may be asked to provide sensitive information or click on links that lead to phishing sites.

TIP: Never click on unknown links in text messages and look for misspellings, typos, or poor grammar. If you have a question, contact the organization directly through it’s verified contact information. 

You’re promised large sums of money in return for paying an upfront fee.

TIP: Be skeptical of unsolicited offers and never pay upfront for promises of money. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. 

Scammers pose as tech support from companies like Apple, Microsoft, or Google, claiming your device has issues and they need your login or access to the device in order to resolve it. 

TIP: Never provide personal information or remote access unless you initiated the contact with a legitimate company.

Scammers create fake profiles to establish romantic relationships and ask for money.

TIP: Be cautious of profiles that seem too perfect, and never send money to someone you haven’t met in person.

Scammers will pose as representative from a charity soliciting donations either door to door, or in public spaces like parks.

TIP: Avoid pressure tactics. Only donate to well-known organizations.

 

Scammers impersonate tax authorities claiming you owe a debt and threaten legal action if you do not pay them. 

TIP: Know that the IRS will never demand payment over the phone. Contact the IRS directly if you receive a suspicious call.

Scammers will post fake property listings that require deposits for properties that don’t exist or are not available.

TIP: Verify listings through legitimate real estate sites, and never send money before seeing the property.

Involves fraudulent job offers requiring upfront fees for training or materials.

TIP: Research the company, look for reviews, and be suspicious of jobs that require payment for materials. Most legitimate jobs will not require you to pay to get started. 

Notifications claim that you’ve won a prize but require personal information or payment to claim your winnings.

TIP: Remember that legitimate lotteries don’t ask for payment to claim winnings. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Protect and Secure Your Account

Monitor your account regularly with online/mobile banking for quick an easy access to your account and activity.

Enroll in estatements to access your statement anytime from any device.

Alert the credit union of any unknown or unauthorized transactions on your account.
